Crouching Lemming Hidden Background

More CSS experimentation with the site. Hover over the menu bar up there. Go on, I’ll wait. Whee, Lemming!

The image is a simple animated GIF I put together after a quick Googling. Initially I just wanted to stick the Lemming somewhere unobtrusive on the page, but after a bit of experimenting there’s really nowhere you can put it that doesn’t get a bit distracting and annoying – there’s a reason always-on, auto-playing animations mostly died with Geocities. So I opted to stick it on the menu bar and only appear on mouse over. In itself that’s easy enough – add a “:hover” selector to the menu element and it’s done. But it looks a bit jarring just flicking on and off as you move the mouse around the page so I started looking into having it fade in and out. Since I’ve no idea how to mess with the actual code of a WordPress site or theme it had to be a CSS-only solution.

At first it wasn’t looking hopeful, since it really is the kind of thing people automatically go to Javascript for and with good reason. But eventually I unearthed the fact that Chrome supports transitions on background images. Woo! I did get tripped up by the fact that if you aren’t fading from another image (and one the same size at that) it not only fades but resizes as well. Easy fix, just use another image as the default non-hover background and fade from that.

The code is all below the cut.

Quadtree Art

QuadtreeOracle Banner

I’ve always had an interest in computer generated imagery and art, even though I’ll be the first to admit I level a level of artistic skill roughly on par with underdeveloped slime-mould. Fractals, Lorenz Attractors, cellular automata, and so on. All fascinating.

So after seeing a few pictures generated using Quadtrees to approximate actual images, I thought I’d give it a shot.

Wallpapers for you Sir

Sir, You Are Being Hunted

The talented and presumably human Christian Anderson has created a series of wallpapers for Big Robot’s Sir, You Are Being Hunted. Despite the frailties of his mortal, organic frame Master Anderson’s works are both sinister and delightful. Just like the game.

New images: The Happy Collection

I made the first wallpaper in this set, Endorphin, during my final exams back at university.  Having my desktop looking so happy helped me keep a sense of proportion about the whole thing.

Shortly after I posted it I got a request from a friend, who was also doing exams,  who wanted a new version – it was great, she said, but needed more pink.  And so “Happy Smarties” was born:

Shortly after that a different friend wanted yet another version, this time for his multi-monitor setup.  So here’s the extreme widescreen version:

This set always amused me, but I’m still surprised at the amount of traffic they got on my old website.

New Image: Redshift

When I first posted this image I had this niggling feeling it was very similar to one I’d seen elsewhere. Years later, I still get that feeling. Regardless, Redshift spends more time as my desktop wallpaper than anything else I’ve made.

New Image: Speed of Night

One of my earlier pictures I put together with Vue D’Esprit, and one of my favourites.

Flicking through site stats, I found out that the CG images I had on my old site actually got a fair few hits, so I’m going to sporadically upload them to this site over time, whenever I’m too busy and/or lazy to write an actual post.

The pictures are all either algorithmically generated, or composed with an old copy of Vue D’Esprit I got free with PC Format yonks ago.  As before, they are all available under a Creative Commons License (Attribution-NonCommercial-ShareAlike 3.0).
