In my history of video game music series I sung the praises of LucasArts games in general and Monkey Island 2 in particular. I steered clear of the original Monkey Island, partly because I never played it, partly because I wanted to give it an entry all of its own.
The whole soundtrack for Monkey Island – composed by Michael Land, Barney Jones, Andy Newell, Patrick Mundy – is superb in every way but the main theme remains one of the all-time greats, as evidenced by the sheer number of remixes its had over the years. You only need looks at OC Remix, for example, or the upcoming Video Games Live album, Level 3.
Such amazing music coaxed out of such limited technology. I appreciate where we’re going but it’s saddening that we’re heading away from those great and beautiful days. R.I.P. LucasArts.
