Game music: The String Arcade

String Arcade CoverIt’s been a while since I posted a not-quite-game-music album, so here we go. A string cover of some well-known (and less well-known) themes. I present to you: The String Arcade. Don’t even click through the jump to read the rest of the article – just follow that link and buy the album. It’s beautiful.

Back in 2013 a Kickstarter campaign was successfully funded and the world become a noticeably better place. For in August 2013 Dren McDonald started working with a collection of talented musicians, and in February 2014 one of the greatest pieces of gaming art was released upon the world. The String Arcade. Did I already use the word ‘beautiful’? How about superb? Haunting? Moving? They’ll do too.

From the opening track, Plants vs Zombies’ Grasswalk, far superior to the track it covers, to the iconic Sonic 2 boss fight music, the whole album is just wonderful. The standout track though has to be their version of Portal 2’s Turret Suite, though the Legend of Zelda title theme isn’t far behind.

No matter the mood and tone of the original music and the games they support, The String Arcade is a beautiful piece of work and more than worth the $10 asking price. If you didn’t already go and buy it, do so now. Here, I’ll even give you the link again so you don’t have to go back up to the top: Buy now.
