There was no way this series would go a full year without a Mario game. But! Everyone knows the signature Mario themes, while Super Mario Bros 2 is a different story.
If you asked me, I couldn’t hum any music from Super Mario Bros 2, but every track is instantly recognisable and takes me right back. It might have started life as a completely different game but it has a place in my childhood as a piece of pure Mario fun. It’s still Koji Kondo, and even features the main Mario theme tune in there, but has a markedly different sound to other Mario games as befits its interesting origins.
